Field Trip to
The B & O
Railroad Museum
- Wednesday, November 11th -
(meet at 9:30 a.m.)
This family field trip is geared for
students of all ages. Join us at the B&O Railroad Museum
in Baltimore for a nostalgic journey into the history of
American railroading. The B&O Railroad Museum is a
treasure trove of railroad history and machines. This
museum holds the most significant collection of "railroadiana"
in the Western Hemisphere. We will begin our self-guided
tour in the Roundhouse which was built in 1884. It’s
wooden turntable is surrounded by historic steam, diesel
and electric locomotives as well as rare 19th century
passenger and freight equipment. The museum site
includes 5 historic buildings and over 125 pieces of
full size railroad equipment, railroad artifacts and
more.
At the museum we will trace the growth
of railroading from the tiny "grasshopper" locomotives
to the 320 ton Allegheny (a monster steam engine capable
of producing 7,500 horsepower).
We have reserved the picnic pavilion for those who wish
to gather for a picnic lunch after our tour. The tour is
from 10 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a train ride from
11:30 to noon.
Our discounted tickets for this field
trip are $8.50 per person ages 3 and up and includes the
train ride.
