High School Thursday Classes 2007 - 2008
Acrylics
Course Content: Students will focus on the basic elements of acrylic painting including various painting techniques and elements of design. Assignments are taught and explained in class through lecture, visuals, and demonstrations. Subject matter varies, but usually includes nature, landscapes, still life, and the animal/insect world. Inspiration may also come from illustrating scripture, copying the Masters, and the student’s imagination. Students use the remainder of the class time practicing skills just taught. Weekly homework assignments reinforce that week’s class work. Students are expected to complete weekly homework assignments outside of class time. This will require work in the sketchbook in addition to “finished” work on either sketchbook paper or canvas. Often this will require 2-4 hours per week outside of class time to complete throughly. It is to the student’s advantage to call or e-mail the teacher with any questions concerning the homework, as long as it is before Wednesday evening. This is a great class for an intermediate art student. Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to oversee their students by providing a quiet atmosphere in which to develop their painting skill and by checking assignment completion weekly. Grading: Grades are based on completed assignments which demonstrate that the student has followed directions and used the tools/techniques as taught. Grade: 9-12 Credit: 1/2 Pre-requisites: Basic Drawing or permission of the teacher Supplies: Purchased by CBA and billed to each family (approximately $65) with the exception of a water container, paper towels, a sponge, an old tooth brush, a rag, and a palette knife which each student supplies. Back to top Course Content: Class time will be spent expanding on previous knowledge, demonstration and practice of more advanced chords (major and minor seventh, dominant seventh chords, etc.) and ensemble playing. There will be discussion of worship leading and playing in church. There will be periodic verbal quizzes. The class will prepare for a concert given at the end of the school year for parents and friends, which serves as the final exam. Students will need to practice 20-30 minutes daily in 10 minute increments. Parental Involvement: Parents should encourage their student to practice daily and occasionally serve as an “audience” occasionally for the student as desired. Grading: Grades are based on class participation, attitude, verbal and written quizzes, and a final concert. Grade: 7-12 Credit: 1/2 Pre-requisites: 9-12 grade/recommendation of Mr. Abshire Supplies: See Beginning Guitar Back to top Course Content: The students will be assigned particular chapters to read as homework each week as well as corresponding assignments. A part of each class time will be devoted to directed oral discussion. The student will be expected to participate by sharing his/her own understanding and interpretation of the material and will learn from others. Students will be required to write three essays over the course of the year. In addition to the three required novels, the students will be exposed to additional American authors through the completion of a unit on the Classic American Short Story. Literary terms/devices and author world views will be introduced as they relate to selected readings. Students will practice analyzing literature for underlying truths and/or messages and cultural and/or spiritual impact. Periodic tests and quizzes will be administered during class. Students should expect to spend an hour a day on homework for this class. Required Novels: The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne (bring to first class); The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain; The Great Gatsby - F. Lessons are taught and explained in class through lecture, visuals, and demonstrations. Students use the remainder of the class time practicing the skills just taught. Weekly homework assignments reinforce that week’s class work. Assignments will vary between graphite pencil and colored pencil. Topics include: learning to see, textural techniques, color, negative space, still life, sighting, figure drawing, interiors, portraiture, and nature drawings. Students are expected to complete weekly homework assignments outside of class time. Sometimes this will require 2 or more hours out of their weekly school schedule to complete thoroughly. Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to oversee their student at home by helping them budget their drawing time throughout the week so there isn’t a rush to complete assignments late Wednesday or early Thursday. Drawing is a skill. As with all skills it takes time and concentrated effort in order to see improvement. Parents can also encourage students by providing a quiet atmosphere in which to draw, and by checking to see if the student has packed his finished homework and supplies each week. It is to the student’s advantage to call or e-mail the teacher with any questions concerning the homework ... as long as it is no later than noon on Wednesday. Grading: Grading is based on class participation and completed homework assignments which demonstrate that the student followed directions and used the tools/techniques as taught. Back to top Course Content: First semester: The student is assigned a paper each week based on that week’s instruction. This paper is due the following week. The first half of each class is devoted to going over the corrected papers, giving each student an opportunity to ask questions of the instructor one-on-one about mistakes and for the student to make corrections to the paper. If all the corrections cannot be completed in the first half of the class, the student will be expected to make those corrections at home. It is critical that all mistakes are corrected each week as these papers are collected at the end of the semester and a grade is assigned to the “correction process” and averaged with the individual paper grades. The second half of each class is devoted to explaining the new writing assignment for the following week. Second semester: The class will work through the workbook - Writing a Research Paper. Some weeks students will have an assignment in the book as well as working on their individual research papers. Other weeks the assignment will pertain strictly to their paper. Deadlines help the student to stay on track with the long range assignment. For this project the student will need access to a library; internet access is also very helpful. Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to help their students manage their time so work is being done on the weekly assignment each day. The parent may wish to serve as a proof-reader of the first draft of the paper and advise as to possible improvements. It is also important to look over the papers returned each week to ensure that corrections are being made. Grading: First semester: Each paper receives a grade and the correction of all papers is combined for “folder review” grade. These grades are averaged for a semester grade. Grading in based on both mechanics (spelling counts!) and elements of composition. NO LATE PAPERS ACCEPTED. Second semester: The research project is broken into five grades: note cards, bibliography cards, outlines, rough draft and final draft. These grades are averaged for a semester grade.
