BASIC DRAWING

(Teacher's notes)

Course Content: Each class period students are introduced to the drawing skill or topic of the week. Lessons are taught and explained in class through lecture, visuals, and demonstrations. Students use the remainder of the class time practicing the skills just taught. Weekly homework assignments reinforce that week’s class work. Assignments will vary between graphite pencil and colored pencil. Topics include: learning to see, textural techniques, color, negative space, still life, sighting, figure drawing, interiors, portraiture, and nature drawings. Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to oversee their student at home by helping them budget their drawing time throughout the week so there isn’t a rush to complete assignments late Wednesday or early Thursday. Drawing is a skill. As with all skills it takes time and concentrated effort in order to see improvement. Parents can also encourage students by providing a quiet atmosphere in which to draw, and by checking to see if the student has packed his finished homework and supplies each week. It is to the student’s advantage to call or e-mail the teacher with any questions concerning the homework ... as long as it is no later than noon on Wednesday.

Grading: Grading is based on class participation and completed homework assignments which demonstrate that the student followed directions and used the tools/techniques as taught. Incomplete assignments or those not turned in when due automatically drop a letter grade each week. If necessary, the student may be required to re-do an incorrectly completed assignment.

JR. HIGH SPEECH

Course Content: The emphasis in this class is to get the student comfortable speaking in front of a group. The environment is positive and friendly and students usually build a strong sense of camaraderie and friendship. Assignments will be given and explained, allowing plenty of time in class for questions and discussion about the particular type of speech. Students will learn how to prepare good introductions and conclusions, the basics of speech organization, the elements of a good speech, and how to constructively critique a speech. Students may speak from a manuscript (with the speech written out word for word), an outline or notes - whatever makes them most comfortable, but an “outline sheet” must be handed in before each
2008-2009
speech with the introduction and conclusion written out and the main points listed. Students will draw numbers for each assignment to determine speaking order. After the speech, the class will do a critique which focuses on what made the speech good and what could have made it better. Once a student delivers his/her speech, there is no assignment until all the students have completed that particular assignment. However, students are expected to be in class each week to serve as an audience for classmates and learn from each critique. For each speech assignment, the student must fill out an “outline” form which is provided by the instructor. The number of speeches given during the school year varies according to the class size, but usually each student will prepare and deliver at least 8 different kinds of speeches.

Parental Involvement: Parents are expected to listen to the student practice the speech at least twice and are required to sign a sheet stating that they have listened. This sheet must be handed in before the student will be allowed to give the speech.

Grading: Grading is based on class participation, attendance, attitude and preparation.
